The Cedar Cultural Center celebrates its 30th anniversary this fall at the 10th Annual Global Roots Festival taking place September 15-19 2018. Over the last ten years, The Cedar’s signature Global Roots Festival has offered Twin Cities audiences free, in-depth access to new artistic voices from around the world, fulfilling The Cedar’s mission to promote intercultural appreciation and understanding through global music.
Sona Jobarteh

Sona Jobarteh is the first female Kora virtuoso to come from a West African griot family that has produced renowned musicians such as Amadu Bansang Jobarteh and Toumani Diabaté. Breaking away from tradition, she is a pioneer in an ancient male-dominated hereditary tradition that has been exclusively handed down from father to son for the past seven centuries. Sona’s skills as an instrumentalist and vocalist are backed by the power of a electric four piece band, innovatively blending different musical styles while remaining rooted in West Africa’s Mandinka culture and history.

Aynur has become one of the most well known musicians from Turkey as a outspoken representative for the Kurdish people. A powerful singer, Aynur’s dynamic, mournful music breathes new life into centuries-old Kurdish folk songs that tell the stories of Kurdish women through hundreds of years of conflict and oppression. Aynur has collaborated with musicians across the world, including Yo-Yo Ma, who invited Aynur to participate in his Silk Road Project.

The Local Roots Stage invites everyone to celebrate Cedar-Riverside through a series of locally curated musical andartistic performances that showcase the talents of our neighborhood. The Cedar Riverside neighborhood has been a center for creating a sense of home for new immigrants to Minnesota for over a century.
The Cedar celebrates this history of new beginnings with a partnership with Artist Director Lula Saleh of East African Diaspora Artist Initiative (EADAI), a creative and social platform for diaspora artists, who will curate the Local Roots Stage on Monday, September 17th. https://www.facebook.com/EADAInitiative/
