The Cedar Cultural Center celebrates its 30th anniversary this fall at the 10th Annual Global Roots Festival taking place September 15-19 2018. Over the last ten years, The Cedar’s signature Global Roots Festival has offered Twin Cities audiences free, in-depth access to new artistic voices from around the world, fulfilling The Cedar’s mission to promote intercultural appreciation and understanding through global music.
Zhou Family Band
“China’s avant-garde”
For over seven generations, Zhou Family Band has been performing the centuries-old wind and percussion music that has accompanied weddings, funerals, and worship in Lingbi, Anhui Province, part of the Central Plain area which formed the cradle of Chinese civilization. The group creates spectacular performances that blend theatrical stunts with flutes, mouth organs, drums, and cymbals, carrying forward Chinese folk traditions into the 21st century.

Rio Mira is a marimba-centered supergroup that takes its name from the river that runs between Ecuador and Colombia. Their music highlights the Afro-Pacific culture established by rebel slaves known as cimarrones in the early 16th century, which continues to bind together a region divided by state borders. Rio Mira’s cyclical, rippling marimba rhythms flow like rivers traversing toward freedom, mixing with drums, shakers, and call-and-response vocals and harmonies that harken back to the cimarrones’ African roots.

50% of the residents in Cedar Riverside currently are under the age of 25. These inspiring and curious young people are the future of our neighborhood. The Cedar celebrates youth, their future, and the good their creativity brings to our community with performances curated by our youth council, The Cedar Stars, a group of Somali highschool students that aspire to be creative leaders in the West Bank Neighborhood.
Tufawon
On his latest project The Homecoming, Southside Minneapolis rapper and producer Tufawon returns to his local roots with a new global perspective, creating slick, gritty music that feels both hyper-local and universal.
Dua
Dua is a multidisciplinary performing artist based in Minneapolis who hopes to explore art as a means to engage in complex expressions of humanity.
