ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Join us for a performance and discussion with Sofía Viola, an artist based in Argentina whose Cedar debut was cancelled due to the pandemic. This program takes us directly into Sofía’s home in Buenos Aires for an intimate acoustic set that highlights the strength of her voice and the brilliance and honesty of her songwriting. Songs are spliced with commentary on her own musical journey, music's connection to the healing plants and ancestors, and the role of spirituality in the modern world, based on interview questions prepared by Vladimir Garrido from local Andean musical group, Alma Andina.

As many of you know, The Cedar typically kicks off each season in September with our annual three-day Global Roots Festival. With performance halls shuttered around the world, in lieu of the Festival, we are partnering with presenters throughout North America to keep our commitment to global music strong through an online celebration of music from around the world. We hope you enjoy this program with Sofía Viola on The Cedar Public Access Channel and check out all of the events happening as part of Global Music Month 2020 here: www.globalmusicmonth.org!

The Cedar Public Access Channel is an online stream that presents creative content planned and produced by artists in collaboration with The Cedar. You can tune in through The Cedar’s Facebook or YouTube.

All programs will be available for free with a suggested donation to cover the costs of the program. All artists will be paid. You can make a donation to The Cedar at https://thecedar.org/donate

ABOUT SOFÍA VIOLA

Sofia is a free spirit and a joyful performer with an easygoing attitude that is, both, contagious and healing at the same time. Her music is a beautiful collage made from pieces of Latin America showcasing different rhythms that stay with you all day long

Sofia Viola is an Argentinian singer, composer and actress with an overflowing talent. She composes songs in which she professes her unconditional love for Latin American folklore in all its dimensions and in which she tells micro stories that speak of love, ecology, junk food and universal themes from her particular vision and grace. Her style was formed in the suburban tango, but she also draws from rock music and the Argentinian “Tropical Wave” style.

With only 29 years, and already 13 years on the stage, she travels accompanied by her guitar and her charangón and, true to her nomadic style, she has toured Argentina and many neighboring countries such as Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil and Colombia, after which she jumped across the ocean to appear in Europe, where she has played in Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Pirineos and Berlin.

Throughout her journey, she was received and loved by audiences of all ages. The thing is that Sofia Viola’s live performance is astounding, with her acid humor that springs naturally. Her talent on stage is at the service of the author’s song, with an indiefolk touch in tangos, milongas, cumbias, vallenatos, boleros, blues, among many other rhythms she both absorbs and composes.

In 2019 she started with a tour in Brazil during carnival time, in which she performed in the most big festivals like Psicodalia (Curitiba) and Rec Beat (Recife).

Nowadays she is preparing her show to play in Mexico and Spain again, and in Canada and will hopefully make her United States debut once international touring opens up again.
