The Cedar Cultural Center kicks off its 30th anniversary season this fall at the 10th Annual Global Roots Festival taking place September 15-19 2018. Over the last ten years, The Cedar’s signature Global Roots Festival has offered Twin Cities audiences free, in-depth access to new artistic voices from around the world, fulfilling The Cedar’s mission to promote intercultural appreciation and understanding through global music.
The first night of the Festival, Saturday September 15th is a ticketed 30th Season Celebration featuring two artists of significance to the Cedar Riverside neighborhood’s history of immigration:
Aar Maanta
“The voice of a new Somali generation”
Aar Maanta is a Somali musician whose activism, work and creativity led him to become a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR), while leading one of the only active touring bands in the world that plays live Somali music. His work includes the recent UNHCR campaign about irregular youth migration in the Horn of Africa, Dangerous Crossings, for which his song “Tahriib” was reproduced and performed in collaboration with leading artists from Africa.

Taking their name from a provincial slang term meaning "hullabaloo,” Swedish band Hoven Droven combines the melodic sense of folk music with the intensity and attitude of a heavy metal band. Since coming together in the small town of Ostersund in 1989, the band has continued to roar with unleashed potency. Their 2006 album "Jumping at The Cedar," recorded live at The Cedar, was nominated for a Swedish Grammy.

The Cedar’s Community Plaza
The Local Roots Stage invites everyone to celebrate Cedar Riverside through a series of locally curated musical and artistic performances that showcase the talents of our neighborhood out on The Cedar Community Plaza.
Not too long ago, the Cedar Riverside neighborhood and the Mill District used to be one neighborhood, but the building of 35W cut the area into two districts. Tonight's performances pay homage to the shared community of both the oldest and the newest neighborhood in Minneapolis, while uplifting and highlighting local history and businesses.
MILL CITY SINGERS AND THE MACPHAIL COMMUNITY YOUTH CHOIR LED BY JD STEELE
Led by Twin Cities’ artist J.D. Steele, of the famous Steele Family, these energetic, young people perform many styles of music including jazz, gospel, pop and East African.
